The Chenstokhovsk (Częstochowa) Icon of the Mother of God (The Black Madonna of Częstochowa) is one of Poland’s main holy icons. It is honored by Catholics and Orthodox Christians alike. According to legend, the Chenstokhovsk Icon of the Mother of God is one of the 70 icons of the Holy Mother of God created by Saint Luke. This holy artifact stayed in Byzantium for a long time and then ended up in Galicia. After some of Galicia’s territory became a part of Poland, the icon was handed over to the Poles. It is currently preserved in the Jasna Gora Monastery in the city of Częstochowa, Poland.
One can hear Polish people say, “Matko Bosko Częstochowsko!” all over the country, regardless of their age and gender. This icon of the Mother of God is also referred to as the Queen of Families due to the support and miracles attributed to it. These miracles are even recorded in a special “registry” book. Numerous believers are constantly praying for help and healing before this icon.
