Cossack Mamay is one of the most popular characters in Ukrainian folklore. Portraits of this heroic figure used to often hang in the red corner (altar) of Ukrainian homes alongside religious icons. A Cossack is the embodiment of a defender and Ukrainian spirit with such intrinsic traits as wisdom and the craving for freedom.
Mamay is surrounded by things full of symbolism and sacred value. The oak symbolizes vitality, might and firmness. The horse epitomizes free spirit. The kobza is the Cossack’s soul that he never abandons. The pipe stands for the only entertainment of a Cossack in his lonely life. The spear and the cup remind of the transience of life, because spears used to be put upon graves, with damask and a cup being placed inside them. The Cossack is sitting in Buddhist meditation posture, and his weapon is always by his side. This implies his peacefulness and, at the same time, readiness to protect himself and immediately grab his weapon in a moment of danger.
